Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world (120k long and 30k wide) and the only place
on Earth where where tall rainforests grow on sand dunes up to 240 metres above sea level
This unique island is a unique combination of beautiful beaches, creeks and rainforest as well as
being home to about 300 different animal species.
You can watch whales, go fishing, diving, swimming, and boating - you can go to sand-blows,
shipwrecks and Aboriginal sites - you can stay at deluxe or budget hotels - in cabins or
backpackers hostels - on houseboats or yachts.
Over the centuries currents and winds have driven large amounts of sand north-wards to what
we now call Fraser Island. This sand forms an excellent water table, so Fraser has over 100
freshwater lakes.
Fraser Island has superb white sandy beaches - the main stretch of beach on the eastern side of
the island is known as Seventy Five Mile Beach and seems to go on for ever.
The only cars allowed on the island are four wheel drives, but care is needed with them and
permits are required.
Recommendation
For the budget travel person or those planning a backpacking holiday in Australia Fraser Island
would have to be a high priority.
